Which retinol is best for beginners? I have dry skin and I am 35. In Canada, it is difficult to get a prescription filled quickly from a dermatologist or doctor. It looks like a lot of money, and I am not sure where to begin.
Hi there! For beginners with dry skin, starting with a gentle, over-the-counter retinol is a great idea. One good option is Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream, which contains a lower concentration of retinol and includes hydrating ingredients to help minimize dryness. Another excellent choice is CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum, as it combines retinol with ceramides to help restore the skin barrier and retain moisture. Both of these are available in Canada and are reasonably priced. When starting with retinol, apply it every other night and follow with a good moisturizer to help with any dryness. Always remember to use sunscreen during the day, as retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Hope this helps, and good luck with your skincare journey!
As someone who also has dry skin and is cautious about starting retinol, I’d suggest beginning with a gentle over-the-counter product to ease into it. From my experience, a good starter retinol is something like The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane or CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum. These options are both mild and hydrating, making them ideal for beginners and those with dry skin. Start by applying it once or twice a week to see how your skin reacts, and gradually increase the frequency. Be sure to use it in the evening and always follow up with sunscreen during the day, as retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. If you’re cautious about the cost and waiting for a prescription, these drugstore options can be a practical way to start without breaking the bank.
The Ordinary retinol serum is what I use right now. It has helped my sensitive skin, so I began out slowly. Additionally, I use The Ordinary’s “the Buffet” serum. My main reason for bringing that up is that you shouldn’t apply retinol and that exfoliation on the same days. I myself use The Ordinary AHA BHA.
